So it's come to pass, the mighty M2 blogs have faded into relative obscurity, suffering the indignity of having an occasional visitor popping by, only to find us lacking in updates. Well, what can we do? Too busy in the library mugging away and trying to reach M3 with a decent pass.
Anyway, this erstwhile blogger decided to post this up for all the male chauvinists out there (i.e. anyone with a third leg, yes ladies, all guys are pigs at heart). Leonard came across this in his extensive research through vast horizons of knowledge, and true to good humour, discovered that even in medical genetics literature there can still be room for biased FEMINISTIC reporting. Read on gentlemen, and bemoan the fact that we guys are poorly misunderstood, and definitely mistreated in this ever-growing world of self-righteous females:
A much misunderstood feature, both of biometric data and of polygenic theory, is regression to the mean. Imagine, for the sake of example only, that variation in IQ were entirely genetically determined. Figure 4.12 shows how in our simplified two-locus model, for each class of mothers, the average IQ of their children is half way between the mother's value and the population mean. This is regression to the mean - but its implications are often misinterpreted. Note however a hidden assumption in this simple model: that there is random mating. For each class of mothers, the average IQ of their husbands is assumed to be 100. Thus the average IQ of the children is the mid-parental IQ, as common sense would suggest. IN THE REAL WORLD, HIGHLY INTELLIGIENT WOMEN TEND TO MARRY MEN OF ABOVE AVERAGE INTELLIGIENCE (assortive mating) and we would not expect regression half way to the population mean, even if IQ were a purely genetic character.
I completely resent the fact that this is a recommended text by one of our Profs! To add salt to the wound, it's a SHE! Gentlemen, this must not be taken sitting down. Get your noses out of your books and rise up against feminism!
